As I reveal the final space in "Project Kitchen Update," I have to admit something; there isn't a single before photo of this space. I asked Mrs. Project Kitchen Update if she had any, and her reply was:
Poor guy. He was so plain that neither of us gave him a second thought/took a picture of him. I need to be better. This would would have been a dramatic transformation, and you would have tipped right off of your chair if you could see the before/after. (You may tip over anyway, when you see the situation that is now going on.)
The room was previously painted in a lovely terra-cotta color, but was outfitted in the builder's original vanity cabinet, had a "medicine cabinet" in the wall, and had a plain builder glass mirror and a plain builder tile. There was a shower (which, if you read this, you know was removed for this project.) It really required re-doing, since we were removing the shower... At least, that's how we justified taking it this far, rather than just sheet-rocking over the shower opening.
A new marble floor, a new vanity cabinet, a pretty black-and-gold painted lantern, and some rather bada$$ wallpaper, and we have ourselves and after that makes my head spin. I simply cannot convey the experience of this room though my photos. I need a serious professional to capture this, as the lighting is great for real life, but not for taking pictures. So... Here we go. Here is the photo my clientfriend sent me as the floor was going in:
Classic black-and-white. This was a great foundation for what was to come...
We added a chair rail, and used a VERY BOSSY wallpaper on the top, while using a subdued woven checkerboard grasscloth on the bottom half. She sent me this the day the wallpaper was going in:
*Long pause due to speechlessness*
Not many people will trust me enough to take my ideas this far. I am honored that she did, because I think I have a new place to live if this whole living-with-my-own-family thing doesn't work out. I'll just put a sleeping bag on the floor in here and sneak into her kitchen at night to steal string cheese and Perrier.
I went to take some pictures the other day, and this was the best I could get. The gorgeous Venetian mirror was a score of hers from an estate sale (we may, or may not, be addicted to them - and home consignment shops...) We had to take a few of the side pieces off of it to get it to fit over the sink, but it is still lovely even without them, if you ask me. Come to think of it, we actually found the lantern at a designer sample sale, too... (For a fraction of what the new would have been. Yay! Because that wallpaper was a serious investment. Serious.)
What do you think? Could you ever? I could. I could love this in a box, with a fox; in a house, with a mouse; I would like it here or there, I would like it ANYWHERE! Did I really just do that? Sorry. That wallpaper makes me lose my mind.
